Dr. Ennis Shares his RX for Success

Healogics Chief Medical Officer Dr. William Ennis has been a pioneer for advanced wound care in the U.S. His career has taught him a lot of lessons that he hopes to pass along to others in the field – and even all of us who weren’t called to become doctors.

Among those lessons, Dr. Ennis advises to stay open to new ideas and career trajectories, to seek and cultivate a council of mentors, and to choose happiness over burnout.

Ennis’ wide-ranging interview with Dr. Randy Cook was captured on Cook’s RX for Success podcast. Along with his prescription for success, Ennis shared stories about his college years and the path that led him to a career in wound care. Known as a pioneer and research champion for improving wound healing rates, Ennis has worked in the field of wound care for more than 25 years.

But his career started on an entirely different path.

“If ever there was a career that emphasized fluidity, it’s mine,” Ennis told Cook on the podcast. “(I went) from wanting to be a basic scientist, to being a doctor doing clinical trials, to being a surgeon, to being a wound care person, to getting business degrees, to doing wound care in the political world of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. If you don’t stay open to (new) things, they are not available.”

Ennis is board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery and family medicine with a certification of added qualification in undersea and hyperbaric medicine. On top of that, Ennis founded the first wound healing and tissue repair fellowship in the U.S. and served as President of the American College of Wound Healing and Tissue Repair.
