Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Improves Healing
By Dr. William Ennis, DO, MBA, MMM, CPE
In our most recent white paper titled, “The Use of Modalities in Wound Care Part 2: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy,” we examine the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) as an adjunctive therapy for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) with Wagner grades 3 and 4. We found significantly improved healing rates for Wagner grade 3 and 4 DFUs when the patient was able to complete their entire course of treatment.
The white paper also examined HBO for radiation cystitis and notes that the studies to date suggest that patients benefit most from HBO when they receive treatment early in the course of this disease to maximize the clinical effects of HBO.
These findings reinforce our previous four factors that reduce unwarranted variability and improve healing rates. Visit frequency and patient engagement are two factors discussed in the first and third white papers in this series. Each person who comes to our Wound Care Centers® is encouraged to stay positive and actively participate in their care so that treatment is completed and healing is achieved.
Healogics proprietary data, along with analysis of respected medical literature, has revealed four factors that affect patient healing trajectories across all stages of healing. These four factors are: Frequent/Regular Patient Visits, Preventing Stalled Wounds, Increasing Patient Engagement and Utilizing Advanced Modalities. You can read and download all four white papers on our Wound Science Initiative webpage.
Take care and be well,
Bill Ennis
